Go ahead and pitch that idea, make random suggestions, be the voice.

International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate and appreciate the achievements of women. This year IWD’s theme is ‘embrace equity’ through innovation for a gender-equal future. The focus is for change and education to achieve equity, equality and empowerment for all women and girls.

This feature is part of a series of profiles on some of the women that BMSA are fortunate to have across a range of our functional teams. In a largely male-centric industry, our women bring fresh perspectives and diverse influences to the table, that make a positive contribution to the overall success of the company.

How long have you been at BMSA and what does your role entail?

I started with BMSA in September 2017. My role has evolved immensely over the last 5 years, starting as an Admin in the Brisbane Branch, then moving into regional. My role revolves around Assets, Capex, vehicles, financial reporting, HSEQ requirements, and general operations for the region, along with a strong focus on compliance.

Did you always want to be an Operations Manager? What do you aspire to be?

I started my career in management quite young. I was a branch manager in a large Australian company by the age of 22, and to be honest, Operations Manager was not on my radar until I came to BMSA. I could see the potential I had with the ongoing support of Head office and my Regional team. It has certainly not been easy, but I aspire to be an influential leader to my female counterparts.

Were you mentored earlier in your career?

I took a lot of my mother’s advice. I came from an Army and finance background – both very structured, both very disciplined. Not mentored as such, but a few words I will always stick by are “do not ask anyone to do anything you are not prepared to do yourself.” I’ve had a few good managers that have trusted my judgement over the years which has been a real confidence booster. However, it is always good to get constructive feedback as it helps you grow and learn from criticism.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

This one’s from my father – “respect is earnt, not given out with your title.”

Do you have a motto in life or a favourite saying?

You can be a strong cookie – but every cookie crumbles.

What does International Women's Day mean to you?

It shouldn’t be a day and we need to move past celebrating a day. This is reality – I am not special for being a woman in the workforce and I am no different to any other person in our company.

In a predominantly male-dominated industry, what are women able to offer the business?

We offer a different perspective – a view which may not have been appreciated prior. I believe we offer a sense of calm, guidance, and support, which was very limited before women participated in the workforce.

What’s been a highlight for you in your role at BMSA?

A real highlight has been the support from our National team. It shows true colours when you reach out and get a positive and supportive network willing to help.

What advice would you like to give other women in an earlier stage of their career journey?

Don’t stop speaking up. If you know your worth go ahead and pitch that idea, make random suggestions, be the voice.

Are you a cat or a dog person?

Absolutely both. I have a Bengal cat, and a Staffy dog. But I love all animals. They’re better than humans!

What’s your secret skill?

Master investigator. I will find out, don’t try and hide it... cos I will find out.

What are a couple of fun facts about you that your colleagues wouldn’t know?

This one’s dangerous! If my colleagues don’t know, then there is a reason for that.
